Developmental Disability Nursing is person-centred and the primary aim is to improve the physical and mental well-being of persons with intellectual disability (ID) using the biophysical social approach.

The staff has to acquire a wide range of skills to support persons with ID with complex needs. He / she needs to form partnerships with caregivers and professionals from various disciplines.

Role of the developmental disability nurse :

  • Be a strong advocate for persons with ID.
  • Work in different settings with innovative ways to tackle unique situations.
  • Facilitate and support mainstream access to healthcare for persons with ID.
  • Support families and clients during hospital admissions.
  • Take a specialist role in community nursing and work closely with partners.
  • Pursue excellence in practice.
  • Facilitate audit of programmes.
  • Involved in teaching, training and research.
  • Requirements

  • Registered Enrolled Nurse (SNB License) with minimum of 2 years of clinical experience.
  • At least a NITEC in Nursing.
