The Post UWCSEA looking for a Science Laboratory Supervisor to join from August 2020. The incumbent will work across both campuses.
Main Responsibilities The incumbent is responsible for, ensuring that a safe, effective and efficient laboratory technical service is provided for use by students and teaching staff.
Providing technical advice and assistance in the classroom to support students and to assist teaching staff with the provision of learning activities, across all areas of science.
Co-ordinating the use and development of practical resources and facilities within the science department and ensuring that policies and protocols for the department are up to date and adhere to the Line management of science technicians including induction, professional development, training and performance management jointly with respective subject heads.
In collaboration with the Health, Safety and Risk Manager, ensure that health and safety requirements, license requirements and relevant regulations are in place and adhered to, including the completion and recording of necessary checks and licenses.
TEAM MANAGEMENT Organise and monitor the science technicians’ day to day workloads to meet departmental and cross-curricular needs including cover for absences, delegating tasks appropriately and duties during school breaks Work to enhance the department’ s capabilities through effective staffing and development of technicians by : anticipating staffing requirements by comparing department needs with strengths and weaknesses of existing staff coaching team to collaborate with others and maintain good relationships with students, parents / carers and colleagues motivating the team and providing timely coaching and feedback establishing goals and delegating tasks appropriately developing collaboration opportunities between campuses : training, professional development across science disciplines and career progression.
Supporting the head of science and facilities to implement contingency plans to meet the needs of the science department / s in the event of emergencies such as absence, power cuts or equipment failure.
Establish and maintain good relationships with all students, parents / carers, colleagues and other professionals. Under the guidance of the head of science, responsible to put in place requirements for practical school and examinations and coordinate the placement and maintenance of appropriate classroom and corridor displays within the science department / s including long term projects.
HEALTH AND SAFETY FOCUS Under the guidance of the Health, Safety and Risk Manager, ensure that staff in the science department / s are aware of and comply with all health and safety requirements and other relevant regulations.
Responsible for the writing, maintenance and training of department’s SOPs. Apply and maintain licenses / certifications required for laboratory service.
Ensure that equipment is in good working order and that laboratories, preparation areas and storerooms are in a clean, safe and orderly condition.
Ensure the cleaning and maintenance of glassware, equipment and sinks as well as the safe treatment and disposal of used materials and responding to actual or potential hazards.
Ensure end of day protocols are met in preparation rooms. Under the guidance of the head of science, responsible for the promotion and observance of a healthy and safe working environment including the safe storage and accessibility of equipment and materials and share learnings across campuses and review technician SOP’s.
Person Specifications A Level Qualifications or higher 8 years experience of working in a relevant discipline within a laboratory or similar environment.
Prior experience in line management of staff 3 years experience in an educational setting e.g : K-12 school Currernt working knowledge of relevant safety policies and procedures based on 3 years of experience Able to lead, develop and motivate a team of staff, delegating duties as required.
Ability to build and form good relationships with students and colleagues. Ability to work constructively as part of a team, understanding school roles and responsibilities Qualified and familiar with safety code and practices for laboratories and applicable legal and other requirement including but limited to CLEAPSS, WSG SG Guidelines Laboratories Handling Chemicals Ability to improve own practice / knowledge through self-evaluation and learning from others.
Verbal and written communication skills appropriate to the need to communicate effectively with colleagues, students and other professionals.
